Under his leadership, TotalEnergies has embarked on a significant transformation, marking a shift towards more sustainable energy sources while maintaining a strong presence in the oil and gas sectors.

Pouyanné graduated from two of France’s most prestigious institutions, the École Polytechnique and the École des Mines de Paris. He began his career in public administration, holding various positions in the French Ministry of Industry and the Ministry of Environment. This early experience provided him with a deep understanding of energy policies and environmental issues, which would later prove invaluable in his corporate career.

Career at TotalEnergies

Pouyanné joined TotalEnergies in 1997, quickly rising through the ranks. He held several key positions, including roles in Angola and Qatar, both critical regions for the company. Pouyanné also supports initiatives to reduce the carbon footprint of the company and its customers, developing solutions such as biofuels and green hydrogen. These efforts reflect his vision of a future where hydrocarbons coexist with cleaner, more sustainable energy sources.

Pouyanné’s leadership is characterized by a blend of pragmatism and long-term vision. He is known for his direct and transparent management style and his ability to navigate the complexities of the global energy industry. Under his guidance, TotalEnergies has not only solidified its leadership in the oil and gas sector but has also taken bold steps to become a major player in the energy transition.

Global Impact

Pouyanné’s influence extends beyond TotalEnergies. He plays an active role in various international organizations, promoting sustainable energy policies and international cooperation. His impact is felt in climate discussions, where he advocates for a balanced approach that considers economic realities and global energy needs.

Patrick Pouyanné faced controversy in 2021 when TotalEnergies continued its involvement in the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) project, which drew criticism from environmental groups due to its potential ecological impact and displacement of communities. Despite the backlash, Pouyanné defended the project by emphasizing TotalEnergies’ commitment to mitigating environmental risks and promoting sustainable development in the region
