Andrey Bokarev was born on the October 23rd, 1966 in Moscow, Russia. He is a russian businessman and president of Transmashholding (TMH), Russia’s leading manufacturer of railway equipment and supplier of the Russian rail transport operator RZD.
Career
Andrey Bokarev graduated from the Moscow Institute of Finance in 1990. Since 1998, Andrey Bokarev has held numerous positions within the companies of UMMC group (Ural Mining and Metallurgical Company) founded and chaired by Iskander Makhmudov.
Since 1999, he has been Chairman of the Board of Directors of Kuzbassrazrezugol, one of the largest coal producers in Russia. He also joined the Board of Directors of UMMC in 2000 and those of Rosterminalugol (coal port company) and Transmashholding in 2004.
In 2006, he also joined the Executive Board of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (RSPP), and in 2007 he became Chairman of the Coordinating Council of Associations of the RSPP of the Siberian Federal District.
2008: the start of the Transmashholding adventure
2008 was a major turning point for Andrey Bokarev, as he was appointed President of Transmashholding, one of the greatest jewels of Russia’s industry. He is recognized in Russia as a brilliant entrepreneur, appreciated for the sharpness of his strategic vision and the finesse of his entrepreneurial mindset. His name is often associated with major Russian diplomatic and economic summits, such as the Vladivostok and Saint Petersburg forums, the Valdaï Club and the recent Russia-Africa summit in Sochi. He is also a member of the Russian Geographical Society.
Within the span of just a few years, Andrey Bokarev transformed Transmashholding into a leading company in Russia and abroad. He won contracts in Argentina, Egypt and South Africa and in 2008 signed a partnership agreement with the giant Alstom to develop a new generation of rolling stock for Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States. This agreement was widely hailed by the Russian and French presidents at the time, Dmitry Medvedev and Nicolas Sarkozy, to the point of the latter awarding him the rank of Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur in 2012. Today, as member of the Association of Franco-Russian Dialogue, Andrey Bokarev continues to work actively to bring both countries closer together.
Sports
Advisor to the Russian Federation’s President for the development of physical culture and sport and member of the Russian Olympic Executive Committee, Andrey Bokarev plays an important role in the development of sports in Russia. Through Transmashholding SA, he has, among other things, built a large part of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games’ infrastructure, much of which ended up being reused for the 2018 Football World Cup. An avid skier, he was President of the Russian Alpine Ski and Snowboard Federation from 2006 to 2010. He is currently president of the Russian Ski Association and the Russian Freestyle Ski Federation. He is also a member of the Board of the International Ski Federation. Andrey Bokarev also demonstrates his commitment to other disciplines as he is vice-president of the Russian Tennis Federation, a member of the Board of Directors of the football club “Locomotiv Moscow” and a member of the Supervisory Board of the hockey club “CSKA Moscow”.
Philanthropy
Andrey Bokarev is a well-known philanthropist in Russia. In 2018, more than 14.6 million euros (approximately 1 billion rubles) were donated to various charities through Transmashholding SA, group companies and through the “Otvetstvennost'” Fund for Support of Social Initiatives. Health, research, culture, sport… more than twenty entities benefit each year from the donations made. These include the Life Line Fund (a foundation for saving serious pediatric illness), the Pirogov Hospital in Moscow, the Bolshoi Theatre, the Fund to Support Historical and Cultural Studies, the Renata Litvinova ‘Aid to Cinema’ Fund and the Centre for Strategic Research.
Distinctions & Awards
Andrey Bokarev has been awarded several medals for his career and for his actions in favour of others: the Légion d’Honneur in France, the 3rd class Order of Merit for the Fatherland and the Order of Friendship, the medal “For a special contribution to the development of the 2nd class Kuzbass” and the medal for the jubilee “60 years of the Kemerovo Oblast”. Andrey Bokarev was also appointed as an honorary Mechanical Construction Worker of the Russian Federation.
