Jean Paul Herteman

Qualifications

Jean-Paul Herteman was born in 1950. In 1970 he graduated from the École Polytechnique. He continued his education and in 1975 graduated from the French Aerospace School of Engineering (École nationale supérieure de l’aéronautique et de l’espace).

 

Career

Jean-Paul Herteman is an aerospace engineer and materials scientist. Since 2007 he has been the CEO of Safran. Since 2009 he has also served as the Chairman of the French Aerospace Industries Association (GIFAS). In 2010 he took on the additional role as the vice-Chairman of the French governments General Council of Armaments (Conseil général de l’armement), which is chaired by the Minister of defence.
After graduation, Jean-Paul Herteman began his career in Toulouse, France as a scientist testing aerospace materials for the General Delegation for Armaments in Toulouse (Centre d’essais aéronautiques de Toulouse). In 1984 he joined Snecma as the Head of Materials and Methods research programme. In 1993 he was promoted to the Head of the Snecma Design Department, and again in 1999 to the Head of the Rocket Engine Division. In 2002 he was appointed CEO of Snecma Moteurs.
In 2004 Jean-Paul Herteman was appointed Deputy Managing Director of Snecma and the General Manager of the Aerospace Propulsion Division.
In July 2007 he was appointed Chairman of the Management Board of the new company Safran. On April 21st 2011, the Board of Safran appointed Jean-Paul Herteman as the company President and Group CEO.
In November 2013, Jean-Paul Herteman was awarded the Industry Executive of the Year title by the industry’s leading publication L’Usine Nouvelle.

Anecdotes

When not in his executive office Jean-Paul Herteman enjoys his passion of ocean sailing. He is also a qualified pilot for passenger airplanes. He is married with two children.
