Qualifications
After graduating with an engineering degree from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Arts et Métiers (ENSAM), Yves-René Nanot continued his higher education by completing an MBA and, in 1964, a PhD from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), USA. His PhD thesis was entitled ‘An experimental investigation and comparative evaluation of priority disciplines in job shop-like queuing networks’.
Career
Having completed his higher education in the USA, Yves-René Nanot began his career in 1962 in the chemical industry with Dupont de Nemours. He held a range of positions with the company in both France and other European countries. In 1980 he was appointed Chairman of the Board of management of Dupont de Nemours (France) and held this position until he left the company in 1983.
In 1983 he joined the bicycle tire manufacturer Hutchinson SA and served as their CEO until 1989, when he was appointed Chairman and CEO of the oil and gas company Total (France).
In 1993 Nanot joined Ciments Français as their CEO. From 2009 to 2013 he also served as the company’s Chairman of the Board of Directors.
Anecdotes
Yves-René Nanot was born in 1937. His main leisure activity is golf. While CEO of Total (1989 – 1993) he was given the nickname ‘Nanot Apocalypse’ by trade union members. He also serves as the Chairman of the Environment Commission of the Confederation of French Industry (MEDEF).
